John True of Union Township, Tuscarawas County, was born September 14, 1831, departed this life March 14, 1913, aged 81 years and 6 months. Mr. True was well known and highly respected and was noted for his honesty and square dealings. With the exceptions of about one year of his early married life, his entire 81 and a half years were spent on the farm where he was born. He was married to Ann E. Beamer, of Tuscarawas County, September 13, 1854, at Norristown, who departed this life December 14, 1867, at the age of 29 years, 10 months and 2 days. To this union were born six children, viz; Malissa, wife of George Beamer, of Cincinnati; Harvey, of near New Cumberland; Ida May, deceased, wife of John Beamer, of Warren Twp; Cora Belle, deceased; McKenzie, of Union Twp, Tuscarawas County, and Edward, who died in infancy. On September 5, 1869, he was married to Rachel Walker, who died February 5, 1912. To this union six children were born, viz; Thurston, of near New Cumberland; Meredith, of near Dennison; Minnie wife of D. S. German; Mary Olive, wife of L. C. Justus; Cloie Dell, wife of William Penick, all of Sherrodsville, and Lester, who died in infancy. He was the grandfather of 30 children, the great-grandfather of 16 children and the great-great-grandfather of one child. He served ten months in the Union army, during the late rebellion, under Capt. J. H. Rhodes, of Co. K, 43rd O. V. I., having enlisted October 8, 1862. Was honorably discharged on the 18th day of August, 1863, by reason of expiration of term of service. Deceased was a member of the Roxford Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. O. L. Williams, pastor in charge, Sunday, March 16, and interment made in the Roxford Cemetery. Mr. True was a victim of paralysis and died after suffering the third stroke.
