Halseys:
I don’t know how or if, these Halseys are related. Since they are all in the same area of IL (DeWitt Co), I suspect they are connected somehow. But, I don’t have any information that would enable that to happen. See my posting on GenForum: Troxell #886.
Downen:
I suspect they may be related, but I have no proof. Job Downen and Alabama Williams (Downen) Troxel (who were married 12 July 1835 in Macon Co, IL,) did have three children: William Alexander Downen, b. 7 Dec 1836, IL, Louisa Downen, b. Nov 1839, IL, and Margaret L. or S. Downen, b. 23 Sept 1840, DeWitt, IL.
The Mary Ann Downen who married Joseph Spencer was b. about 1828. They married 29 March 1849 in DeWitt Co, IL. She may be connected to Job Downen as a sister or daughter from a previous marriage??
Several censuses of the Downen children give the birth state of their father, Job Downen, as Alabama. I haven’t pursued that clue.
As best I can determine the Elizabeth Downen who married William Ford Troxel was the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca (Unknown) Downen. Josiah (1802) and Rebecca (1806) were born in KY.
Chatham:
The Chatham’s are elusive, too.John Chatham was born about 1789. His marriage to Anna Hess Spencer was likely a second or later marriage (Anna was 31 in the 1850 DeWitt Co, IL, census).
Cecelia Chatham (Swearingen) Halsey was born about 1820-1822 (depending on which census data is used.) I don’t know if John and Cecelia are related. With his age and her birth date she, too, could be the daughter of a previous marriage.
Samuel Spencer, Elizabeth (Troxel) Spencer and their six younger children are in the 1850 DeWitt, IL Census: Samuel, 55, farmer, 2800, KY, Elizabeth, 48, IL, Darinda, 22, Letha, 20, Sarilda 17, James 15, Pollis H. 13, Elizabeth 9, Jane 5, Elizabeth Halsey 3.
Then in the 1860 census Samuel Spencer and Elizbeth (Troxel) Spencer, daughters Elizabeth Spencer, 19, and Jane Spencer 15, as well as an Elizabeth Halsey, 14, are still living at home. They have taken in 4 other youngsters as boarders, Samuel P. Chatham, 12, Mark? C. Palmer, 10, Martin Chatham, 7, and Drucilla E. Scott, 1. (The Troxel's and Scott's are also connected through marriages, but I don’t know where this Drucilla fits in?)
The Chatham children are likely the children of their oldest daughter, Anna, who married John Chatham. (In the 1850 DeWitt County census, John is listed as age 61 (b. about 1789), Anna as age 31.) John and Anna Chatham do not appear in the 1860 DeWitt census. The youngest Chatham child in 1860 is Martin, age 7. So, something must have happened to both John and Anna (Spencer) Chatham sometime between 1853 and 1860.
Swearingen:
Much more success here.
William George Swearingen and John H. Swearingen were brothers.
Their parents were Abraham B. Swearingen and Elizabeth Lowe, married 13 Aug 1816 Adams Co, OH. They had 15 children. William George Swearingen (2 Dec 1818, KY – 29 June 1852, IL was the second child. John H. Swearingen (1 Apr 1820, KY-16 Jan 1882) was their third child. Their 15th child was Mary Jane Swearingen, who is my 2X great grandmother.
The Catherine Troxel who married John H. Swearingen is a 1st cousin, 4X removed of my wife.
William George Swearingen m1 Nancy French (Aug 1821 – 25 Aug 1844 DeWitt Co, IL) on 25 Dec 1837, Macon Co, IL. They had four children (Matilda Jane, Louisa, Martin A., and Leodica Swearingen).
William George Swearingen m2 Cecelia (Chatham) Halsey (25 Aug 1844, DeWitt Co, IL) after the death of Nancy (French) Swearingen. After William Swearingen’s death on 29 June 1852, IL, Cecelia then m2 Zebedee Halsey, 4 Dec 1853, in Franklin Co, IL.
William and Nancy are both buried in the Crum Cemetery in Wapella Twp, DeWitt Co, IL.

Cecilla Swearingen, 30, IA
Matilda J. Swearingen, 10, IL, School
Louisa Swearingen, 8, IL, School
Martin A. Swearingen, 8, M, IL, School
Leodica Swearingen, 7, F, IL, School
Perry Swearingen, 3, IL
Angeline Swearingen, 11/12, IL
On the next census page are Elijah W. Swearingen, 26, KY (another brother of William and John H.) and John B. Swearingen, 46, KY. (An uncle of William and John H.) Not too far away, in HH 69/70 is Abraham Swearingen, 53, KY (their father.)
In 1860 Zebedee Halsey and Cecelia (Chatham, Swearingen) Halsey are in Iowa.

Zebedee Holey, 39, Day Laborer, ---, $150, VA, cannot RW
Cecelia Holey, 38, Indiana, cannot RW
Martin Holey, 18, Day Laborer, IL
Thomas Holey, 15, Day Laborer, IL
Perry Holey, 12, IL
Angeline Holey, 9, IL
Josiah Holey, 3, IA
Based on data in the 1850 census, Martin, Perry and Angeline are actually children of William George Swearingen and Cecelia. Thomas is not enumerated with them in the 1850 census, so I don’t know where he belongs.
