This is a brief summary of my Troxel research. The complete document is 142 pages long including 69 pages of footnotes. As always there is the possibility of error.

FREDERICK TROXEL, SR (b. 1762, Frederick Co, MD), is the patriarch of this branch of Troxel’s. He married Anna Hess, 27 Mar 1785 in Frederick Co, MD.

They had at least six children, David Troxel, b. 1786, VA, John Troxel, b. 1788, KY, Henry Troxel, b. 1790, KY, Frederick, Jr. Troxel, b. 1791, VA, Elizabeth Troxel, b. 1795, KY, and Samuel Troxel, b. 1803, KY.

The Troxells residing in Egypt, Whitehall Twp, Lehigh Co, PA, are the ancestors and contemporaries of this line of Troxels. The patriarch of the Egypt, Whitehall Twp, Lehigh Co, PA, Troxels was Peter Trocksell who migrated to America in August 1733 aboard the vessel, Samuel. Peter Trocksell was the father of a David Troxel, who was the father of Frederick Troxel, Sr.

There is also a different group of Troxell’s that migrates to Sangamon Co, IL, from Washington Co, MD in 1836. The Sangamon Co, IL, Troxells are also connected to the Lehigh Co, PA, Troxel family.

A. John TROXEL was the second child born to Frederick Sr, Troxel and Anna Hess. He was born in 1788 in KY. John died before 1850, in IA. He married Sarah/Sallie Brown on 13 September 1809, in Ohio County, KY. “Grayson Co, KY [as the marriage site] is an error in the Troxel(l) Trails book.” This error is confirmed by the marriage record. [Ohio Co. Marriage Bonds, Vol. A, 1808-1828); FHC#1913018]. Ohio County is west of and adjacent to Grayson Co, KY.

Their children.

A1       Anna Troxel was born about 1810 in Ohio Co, KY and died in childbirth in April 1850, in Appanoose Co, IA. She married Ebenezer Rhodes, Jr, on 17 Jun 1830, in Tazewell Co, IL.
A2       Phoebe Troxel.       According to the obituary for her husband, Nicholas Lundy, she was born October 12, 1811, in Ohio County, KY. She died 27 Oct 1896, in Iowa. Phoebe married Nicholas Lundy, 18 May 1831, in Tazewell Co, Illinois. He was born 28 Feb 1807, OH.
A3       Nancy Troxel was born in 1813, [probably Ohio Co,] KY.
A4       Frederick B. Troxel was born in 1815, [probably Ohio Co,] KY. He died on 6 Oct 1889 in Roseburg, Douglas Co, OR. He m1. Elizabeth Betty Copes, on 8 Mar 1832, McLean, IL. Frederick B. Troxel secondly married Elizabeth Emerick, 2 Jul 1859, Platt River, {probably Nebraska} Plains, Oregon Trail. Elizabeth Emerick was born about 1838 and died 18 Oct 1879 in Summit, Benton Co, Oregon. They were on their way to Oregon when they married.
A5       Elizabeth Frederick Troxel, was born 3 May 1816, [probably Ohio Co,] KY, and died 11 Jun 1852, near Georgetown, Pettis Co, Missouri, on the road to Texas.
Elizabeth married Edom Shugart 23 May 1831, in McLean Co, Illinois,
A6       Carter Troxel, was born in 1819, KY, and died in 1892, OR. Carter and his wife, Rebecca A. (Kirkendall) Troxel are found in the 1850 Shoal Twp, Appanoose County, IA census.
A7       Alexander D. Troxel, born 28 April 1821, in Ohio Co, KY, died before 1880. This placement for Alexander D. Troxel is speculative. Some data appears to support him being a son of John Troxel.
A8       Mary Troxel, was born 17 May 1822, Ohio Co, KY. She died 7 Dec 1891 in Marcola, Lane Co, OR. She married James Pike (b. 25 Dec 1822 Adair Co, KY – d. 25 Nov 1895 Marcola, Lane Co, OR) on 1 June 1845 in Rock Creek, Keokuk Co, IA.
A9       Lucinda Jane Troxel was born 9 Oct 1822, IL, and died 31 May 1855 in Fairfield, IA. Most databases have her birth in 1823, IL. However, gravestone information in the Forrest Cemetery in Fairfield, IA, gives her birth and death date information. She married her cousin, Strawder Troxel, son of Henry Troxel, in McLean Co, IL 2 July 1837.
A10       William R. Troxel was born on 17 Jan 1828, in Tazewell Co, IL, and died 2 Jan 1897. He married Elizabeth Riddle on 23 Oct 1851 in Appanoose Co, IA.

B.       Henry TROXEL was the third child of Frederick Troxel, Sr. He was born in Kentucky in 1790 and according to the History of DeWitt County, died about 1874 [in DeWitt County]. He married Letha Anderson on July 11, 1811, in Grayson Co, KY.

Their children.

B1       Samuel A. Troxel was born in Kentucky in 1812 and died on Feb 28, 1888 in DeWitt Co, IL. He married Mary C. Bevan 10 Feb 1842 in DeWitt Co, IL. She died on August 30, 1858. (Death dates from gravestone photograph in the Crum Cemetery in Waynesville, IL.)

B7       David Troxel was born in 13 Jul 1825, KY. He died 16 Feb 1902 in DeWitt, IL. David Troxel married Elizabeth Johnson, 30 Nov 1843, in McLean Co, IL. Both are buried in the Crum Cemetery in DeWitt Co, IL.

B10       Rebecca Troxel was born in 1831 or 1832, IL. Solomon Holsey married Rebecca Troxel, 10 Feb 1850, in Wapello Co, IA. I believe Solomon married sisters.

C.       Elizabeth TROXEL, born about 1 Mar 1795, KY, was the fifth child of Frederick Troxel, Sr. She died 25 Oct 1867 in DeWitt Co, IL. She married Samuel S. Spencer about 1818 in Kentucky. They remained in DeWitt Co, IL. Samuel Spencer was born about 1791 and died September 4, 1877 in DeWitt, IL (per his death notice.)

A listing of burials in the Crum Cemetery, Dewitt Co, IL, gives her age at death as, “72 yr 7 mo 25 da”, resulting in a birth date of about 1 Mar 1795.

Their children.

C1       Anna Hess Spencer was born about 1819, married John Chatham, 5 March 1843 in DeWitt County, IL.

C10       Elizabeth Spencer was born in 1841 in IL, and married Moses A. Triplett. 20 Sep 1877 in DeWitt County, IL.
C11       Jane Spencer, born 1845 IL, married James O. Wilson, 21 Dec 1869 in DeWitt County.

E2.       Mahala Troxel was born about 1822. She married Zebedee Halsey in DeWitt County, IL, October 26, 1840, Vol. A, Page 15. Her birth date is estimated from marriage date, age 18? Zebedee Halsey in 1853 m2 Mrs. Cecelia (Chatham) Swearingen in Franklin Co, IL. They moved to IA about 1857. Thus, I suspect, Mahala died before 1853.
E3.       Malinda Jane Troxel was born about 1824, IL, and married William Judd 25 Jul 1848, in Jefferson Co, IA. This Malinda is not the same as the Melinda Troxel, daughter of John Troxel, who was the first burial in DeWitt Co, IL.
E4.       William Ford Troxel, was born May 6, 1825, DeWitt Co, IL, died 22 Nov 1914, in Pawnee Co, OK. He married Elizabeth Downen, 8 Feb 1846 in DeWitt County, IL.
Williams’ birth year is 1823 in the 1870 census, but 1825 in the 1860 and 1880 censuses.
E5.       Polly Ann Troxel, born about 1827, married Calvin Williams, 25 Feb 1844 in DeWitt County. Calvin and Polly (Troxel) Williams are not listed in the 1850 DeWitt census. However, they are in the 1870 and 1880 Maroa Twp, Macon Co, IL census.

E10.       Harrison Hill Troxel was born 1844, DeWitt Co, IL. He married Emma H. Wilson (b. 9 Oct 1849, died 23 Jan 1942), about 1872 in Kansas. After Harrison’s death in 1878, Emma married John H. Oyster on 4 December 1881, in Miami Co, KS,

Troxel, age 33” marrying a “Mollie A. Patten” on 28 Dec 1881 in Miami Co, KS.

Step Children of Frederick Jr. Troxel. Children of Alabama (Williams, Downen) Troxel and Job Downen.

E13.       William Alexander Downen was born 7 May 1836, IL, and married Lucinda June Wilson 19 Aug 1861 in Miami Co, KS. It is this Alexander I believe to be mistakenly identified in the 1850 DeWitt Co, IL, census as “Alexander Troxel”, b. about 1837. His half-brother, Harrison H. Troxel, married Emma H. Wilson. According to the 1860 census data the Wilson girls do not appear to be sisters. Emma is enumerated with her parents in 1860, and Lucinda, though married after the 1860 census is not listed with the same parents.
E14.       Louisa Downen was born Nov 1839, IL, married William Stockwell 23 Feb 1859, in Miami Co, KS Territory. She, too, is mistakenly identified in the 1850 DeWitt Co, IL, census as “Louisa Troxel”.

The children of David and Nancy.

F1.       Peter Franklin Troxel was born about 1812 in KY. He married Lucy Halsey on 2 July 1835 in McLean Co, IL. Her father, Unknown Halsey, was present at the marriage. Peter died after 1 Jan 1848 and before 1850.

Peter is not enumerated in the 1850 DeWitt census, however, his widow, Lucy Troxel, is. As widow Lucy Troxel, Lucy married again. Lucy Troxel was married to Amos Freeman on 1 June 1855 in DeWitt Co, IL.

This Peter Troxell is not the same as another Peter Troxel in the Sangamon Co. area of Illinois in this time frame. The other Peter, married Susanna Firey, and he came directly to Illinois from Maryland in 1836.

F2.       Frederick S. Troxel, was born 20 Jan 1816, Grayson Co, KY, and died 18 Jan 1892, Daviess Co, MO. He married Isabel Scott 24 June 1842, in DeWitt Co, IL. Isabel was born 19 Dec 1823 in Jackson Co, TN, and died 14 Oct 1895 in Jameson, Daviess Co, MO. Both are buried in the Old Scotland Cemetery, Daviess Co, MO.

F4.       Henry       Thomas Troxel was born 23 July 1825, DeWitt, IL. He is thought by some to have died 7 Aug 1877 (probably Rock Island Co, IL). However, he is enumerated in the 1880 census for Rock Island Co, IL. He married Hannah Asa in McLean Co, IL, 17 Feb 1848.
F5.       Daniel T. Troxel was born 17 Dec 1829, IL, died 18 Jan 1906, Daviess Co, MO. He married Rebecca Emaline Scott, 23 Oct 1849, DeWitt Co, IL.
F6.       Hannah Troxel was born about 1830 (1850 census). She likely died before 1860. She married Samuel B. Asa (b. 30 Jan 1824) on 6 Jan 1848 in McLean, IL. The 1860 census for Rock Island, IL, does not list a wife with Samuel Asa.
Samuel remarried Oct 13, 1861 in Rock Island Co, IL to Mary E. Gorham
F7.       John S. Troxel was born in May 1834 in IL, died 10 March 1863 in KS. He married Eliza Woolman 20 Sep 1857 in Woodson Co, KS. The marriage is recorded in the Marriage Records of Coffey Co, KS, and possibly in Woodson County as well. They were married by his uncle, John B. Scott.
