We recently announced the start-up of our TROUT-DNA Research Project and are pleased to announce that we have started receiving our first 12-Marker Y-DNA test results in mid-December, with additional test results anticipated within the coming weeks.

The first three 12-marker Y-DNA test result panels for our members are posted on our TROUT-DNA Research Project web page at < http://www.familytreedna.com/public/TROUT%5FDNA%5FResearch%5FProject/ >. These project members have also received expanded test results with full explanations to their own personal attention. See the “Project Results” section of the site for discussions of our preliminary findings. The site also has many links of interest for both novice and advanced TROUT researchers.

Is Y-DNA Testing Right for You? – Of great importance to TROUT family researchers and genealogists, Y-DNA is passed down directly from fathers to their sons for many, many generations. Or stated in reverse, a TROUT-male received his Y-DNA down from his father’s father’s father’s line for hundreds of generations back. Females can participate too by simply arranging for the submission of a Y-DNA test for a closely-related TROUT-male as her surrogate. By the way, the TROUT-DNA Research Project is just like any other non-profit genealogy club that you might join, we just specialize in TROUT-DNA research. There are no dues, and the only costs are any lab tests that you might choose to order.

What Does a DNA Test Kit Consist of? – Just a simple swabbing inside the cheek that you mail back to the labs in a provided vile and mailer. No blood, no needles, no pain, it is just that safe and easy.

Who Does the Testing? – We have chosen “FamilyTreeDNA” as our primary testing resource. They in turn use the widely-respected labs of the University of Arizona for all actual DNA testing and lab work.

What Will DNA Testing Tell You? – As we collect even more and more TROUT lines, we can continue to sort through and connect these lines, as well as determine their REOs (recent ethnic origins, such as Germany, England, and such). If you, for a selected example, suspect that you descend from Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT (1689-1760), of near Strasburg, Lancaster, PA who arrived Philadelphia 5 Sep 1738 on the ship "Winter Galley," then Y-DNA testing could prove or disprove this link once and for all. Testing may also identify exact matches to other TROUT researchers. We also submit our test results to “yearch,” a web site that compares Y-DNA test results from a wide variety of other testing labs, so as to greatly increase the chances of exact matches.

Won’t You Join Us? – For this project to realize it’s full research potential, we need to include as many TROUT lines as possible, so as to greatly enhance the TROUT-line sorting and linking possibilities.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Craig H. Trout
volunteer TROUT-DNA Research Project coordinator
