Your documentation for the establishment of the Conewago Chapel later the Basilica of The Sacred Heart of Jesus is questionable.I have a fifteen page history published in 1962.This original chapel was built in 1741 when the first pastor Rev. William Wappeler, S.J. was assigned.The original Chapel was construced of Logs.Construction of the stone church started in 1785 and completed in 1787.An addition to this church took place in 1850 completed in 1851.Prior to 1741 traveling priests visited the area.
However from the history of the area the following is quoted from Dr. Neal Hively land archivist;
"Pennsylvania Land Records are some of the most reliable colonial documents available to researchers, genealogists and historians today. Records summarized here are for official Pennsylvania colonial records in York County, beginning 1736through the end of full land acquisition process (for some tracts as late as 1874.)"
NOTE the begining date 1736 that was when settlers were permitted in the area, crossing the river in Lancaster county to the west side ot claim land.There may have been squatters there prior to 1736 but they did not have protection of any goverment [army] nor could they claim land.The church you mention acquired it's land in 1741.Therefor the dates prior to 1736 must be in error.Nicholas Strasbach was indeed a member of the new church, however the record prior to 1790 have been lost.
Our records Wayne Strasbaugh and mine are all from official documents. We have Nicholas Strasbach he started the paper work to claim his track of land in 1740 the warrent was issued September 10 1750 survey Nov 27 1751 this is under the name Trosbach however when he died in 1753 his son Nicholas Strasbaugh made the distribution including this same track of land.
He could not have been here prior to 1736 as he was in France where his children:
Anne born 1719
Nicholas born 1721
Jeannie born 1723
Jeannie born 1724
Margurette born 1729
Rose born 1732
Jean born 1733
Michael was born in Penna.
Anne was over 16 therefore was not listed as a child in 1736 passenger list.She married Nicholas Ory.
