Samuel Trivett - revolutionary war
Dear Friends,
I believe this to be the Samuel Trivett Listed in the Trivett and local family histories of N.C.
To date, I have found 3 Samuel Trivetts that served in the Am. Revolutionary war. The first served in Me. and the second served in Mass. the dates of service do not match the family history and both men lived a number of years after the war in those states that they enlisted in.
The Samuel listed in the following report matches the best. The dates of service match.
The fact that he served in a VA. and not a Penn. as in the family history can be answered by two things: the 2nd. Va. was mustered in counties near the Va./Penn. state line. Also the family history says only that he served in Penn. (which this Samuel did) not that he served in a Penn. regiment or company. To date I have found no Samuel Trivett in any Penn Regiments or companies.
I welcome any and all comments.
The Report:
Here is a summary of the manuscript document records within the National
Archives microfilms of the 2d Virginia relating to Private Samuel Trivett:

within the file for Captain Calmes' (later Catlett's) Company ...
-"A Muster Roll of part of Capt. Calmes Company 2d Virga. Regt. June9th
1777" - Thereon appears "Samuel Tripett" as private "On Guard"
The bulk of the file is composed of monthly payrolls which are valuable in
affirming Samuel's presence or absence, but provide no other information
(excepting the amount of his wages paid.)
-"A Pay Roll of Part of Marquis Calmes Company of the 2d Virginia Regiment
Commanded by Colo. Alex. Spotswood for the month of May 1777" - "Samuel
Trivett" noted "At Hospital" - monthly wage $6 2/3.

From the manuscript of Washinton's headquarters monthly strength reports of
the Continental Army (Clements Library, University of Michigan) and other
sources, the locations occupied by the 2d Virginia Regiment during the above
time periods are as follows:
May - June 1777 - Bound Brook, New Jersey
July 1777 - Smith's Clove, New York
August 1777 - Camp at the Crossroads (Neshaminy), Pennsylvania, through
Philadelphia to Delaware
September 1777 - Delaware, Battle of Brandywine, Pennsylvania (9/11/77),
various camps in Pennsylvania surrounding Philadelphia
October 1777 - Battle of Germantown (10/4/77), various camps in Pennsylvania
November 1777 - Camp at Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania
December 1777 - Camps at Whitemarsh, the Gulph, to Valley Forge 12/18/77
January - May 1778 - Winter quarters Valley Forge
June 1778 - Departure from Valley Forge 6/18/78, into New Jersey, Battle of
Monmouth 6/28/78
July - September 1778 - Camp at White Plains, New York
October - November 1778 - Camp near Robinson's House opposite West Point
Richard, as I wrote you previously, the Virginia State Library and/or
State Archives may have additional manuscript records for the company. It
would be particularly nice to find additional muster rolls, a descriptive
roster, and any material later than November 1778.I hope the above is of
benefit to your research.
Cordially,
Bob McDonald
