Hello from Richard Trew
Hi all you Trews out there......
My name is Richard (Trew obviously) and I've just come across this website and am amazed at the number of us there are in the world.
I've seen some strings of correspondance regarding the Trews in South Wales and have the following information to submit:
The Trew family, or at least my bit of it, originated in Cornwall. My grandpa, Edward, traced my family tree to Anthony Trew in 1629, and we reckon that we were originally French, though that's speculation (something to do with smuggling brandy etc). What is certain is that during the Industrial Revolution in Britain, Cornish tin miners 'emigrated' to Wales as they were highly skilled in mining and could make a good living in the coal fields; this is why there are so many Welsh Trews, I think. Actually, apart from my own faimly, who, except me,have stayed in the South West of England, the only Trews I have met are Welsh and this seems to bear out the above. I have a copy of the deeds of a house in Monmouthshire for John Trew and his wife Rachael as well, so it looks like an exodus!
Hope this is interesting to someone, I have quite a bit of faimily history at my disposal, thanks to my gramps.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Richard
