The "Epernay" hypothesis is a wild guess by curé Trepanier. The most likely origin of the Trepanier surname is most probably related to the town of Étrépagny in Normandy (still exists). DESTREPAGNY means literally in french "FROM ESTRÉPAGNY" which make much more sense and is more closely related to the original and current spelling of the surname.

Besides, if you do a search for Estrepagny on a search engine, you will find references to some noble families bearing that exact same name in the area south of Dieppe, Normandy, which is the same general area as Etrepagny.
