Scott,
I can't speak for the double names other than to say that in my research of the Scalf's, I have found people to have named a son after a deceased son and I have found when someone was married more than once they have named children the same names as the ones from the first marriage. It hasn't happened a lot but it did happen. Not all of the children, but a son or daughter might have been named in the second marriage the same as the first, especially if it were the same name as the father or mother.
Having seen that in my family, I guess we could assume that it could happen in other families of that time. I used to think that Alex that married Polly was a son of Alex the RWS, but I don't know if that would even be possible because all I know about him is that he married Jane Burton and lived in Hawkins until he died.
I don't know if he married someone before her and had children or not. I have thought about researching that but I'm so covered up with the Scalf's, I don't know if I will ever find the time to do it. I hope I come across something at the Washington Co. Courthouse or Montgomery County that might give me some clues, but not counting on it. If I do, I will sure let you know!
Margaret
