I'm pretty sure they met in Russell County, Scott. I have lots of court records of John Scalf's movements, along with census reports and bonds he signed for marriages of several sons and a daughter in KY.
He was last in Russell in 1835. He then signs for the marriage of two of his sons in Clay Co. KY in October of 1835 and then a daughter in Clay Co. Ky in 1836. By 1838, he is in Hawkins County making a deposition concerning his pension and this is when Alexander makes one in support of his pension.
So, John was in Russell 1830-1835, then Clay Co. KY 1835-1838 and in Hawkins 1838-1840 where he appears on the 1840 census. Alex said he had known him for better than 8 years in 1838 and lived nearby him for part of that time. I'm assuming Alex did not necessarily mean he lived by him for exactly half of the 8 years, but likely said "part of the time" as a general way of speaking which would have been approximately two-three years. That is what makes me think Alex and Polly met in Russell when John was living there in 1830 and Alex was there as well. According to my calculations, Isaiah Trent was born about 1831 and is the oldest son on the 1850 Claiborne census. My estimation of Polly and Alex's marriage is 1825-1830, but that's just an estimation according to the preponderence of the meager evidence.
I believe Alex and Polly went to Clay County either with John or followed him from Russell County. The sons that married in Clay had already left Russell for Clay County before John left. They were working in the Salt Mines there and I think that is why John went to Clay Co. and probably why Alex went as well.
John had some enemies in Russell and sold land in the latter part of 1835. That was the last record of him in Russell. All of this information has always made me think this Alexander was part of Barbara Marsh's line because they were in Russell County; however, it doesn't mean he was just because he happened to be in the same place.
He could just have easily have been part of the Washington County, VA line since Russell was cut from Washington. Something will turn up some day on one or the other. It would be nice to place him now, but I don't think it's going to happen until we find that missing piece to the puzzle, so for now, I just leave them as is. If life ever slows down enough for me to get to Abingdon, I'm going to see if I can find that piece.
