Hello Lynn,
Civil Registry only started on October 1, 1874 in Prussia, and Pomerania belonged to Prussia.
You can write to the State Archives in Stettin [Szczecin] in English, but they will respond in Polish.
The church books entries before 1945 were written in German. Some records were translated into Polish after WWII. So I only have a Polish birth certificate for my grandfather Max Treichel. I think the Poles wanted to kill the German past by doing so because they hated the Germans. Europe was and still is a very complicated "continent".
Regards from sunny Köln,
Willi
