Thank you, Linda, for updating me as much as you could. My mother who had come to help me at the birth of my second child had to take a trip to LA in DEC 1964 to attend her brother Frankie's wife Lucy's funeral and discovered Mel alone with Barney at the time. Because of cerebral palsy Mel had to be dressed, shaved and cared for in a big way. Barney did his best within his limitations. When Mel talked his speech was so garbled you would have had a hard time understanding him. Lea had left and he did not want my mother to know, but her surprise trip discovered the circumstances. In 1965 he had a severe auto accident that resulted in hospitalization until years later a nurse Cathy took him to live with her until his death at 70 years old. . The children had a hard life beyond what most of us could imagine, but Mel loved the children like they were his very own and he had a strong faith in God. They were probably the best part of his life and brought him the most happiness. His story at a good time in his life was in the Ladies Home Journal around 1957 called The Happy Man.
