The Roots Web SSDI,
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgihttp://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
has:
HOWARD HINDSLEY
b. 27 Oct 1920
d. Jul 1976
LR: 37030 (Carthage, Smith, TN)
SSN Issued: Tennessee
He is the only Howard Hindsley they have, out of 74 million people. However, 1976 isn't recent, and it would be odd for a woman to marry a man 17 years younger than her. (Demi Moore is just shacking up with Ashton; they aren't really serious.)
So, this isn't him. He could be her son, though. If Howard the husband was about her age, then he would have been 100 or so when he died.
If you don't have a state, a nation helps. Canadians, Brits, irish, Scots, Aussies and New Zealanders speak English (some of them fluently) and they use the web too.
There are no people named
Alta Veda
Altaveda
Alta Vida
Altavida
in the 1930 census index I subscribe to. There are 722 people named Alta. There are no entries for Alta Trapp or Alta Hindsley. There are 131 men named Howard Hindsley in 1930. None of them fit.
There are 50 people named Hindsley in Tennessee in 1930. I finally found her.
District 12, DeKalb, TN
James H Hindsley, 18, Head
Altie V Hindsley, 22, Wife
She knocked 5 years off her age so people wouldn't know how old an old maid she was when she married James H. The "H" probably stands for Howard.
All six birthplaces are Tennessee (Self, father, mother). They have been married for a year. He is a farmer.
So - if this is your Alta Veda, you now have a county to poke around in and a range of birth years. If she fibbed on the census, she may have fibbed elsewhere. She may have died in DeKalb County. She was almost certainly married there. You also know that Howard used James, sometimes.
The US Gen Web page for DeKalb County has a search engine:
http://www.tngenweb.org/dekalb/search.htmlhttp://www.tngenweb.org/dekalb/search.html
There were 35 hits for Trapp and 9 for Hindsley. I didn't read them all; I wanted you to have some of the fun.
Good luck!
