Descendants of Thomas Trammell

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 TRAMMELL was born Bef. 1617 in Kent, England. He married DOROTHY BOGS Bef. 1637 in Kent, England, daughter of THOMAS BOGS and UNKNOWN.

Notes for THOMAS TRAMMELL:
The ancestoral seat of the Trammell family was in Nurenberg, Germany for many generations. By the thirteenth century, we find them in Enfgland.
The Trammell family came to England from France. Settled first in Devon and later Suffork, England

Notes for DOROTHY BOGS:
daughter of Captain Thomas Bogs

Children of THOMAS TRAMMELL and DOROTHY BOGS are:
2.       i.       PHILLIP2 TRAMMELL, b. Bef. 1637, Devonshire, England.
ii.       APHRA TRAMMELL, d. Aft. 1665.

Generation No. 2

2. PHILLIP2 TRAMMELL (THOMAS1) was born Bef. 1637 in Devonshire, England. He married UNKNOWN.

Child of PHILLIP TRAMMELL and UNKNOWN is:
3.       i.       THOMAS3 TRAMMELL, b. Bet. 1649 - 1654, Devonshire, England; d. Abt. 1725, St Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.

Generation No. 3

3. THOMAS3 TRAMMELL (PHILLIP2, THOMAS1) was born Bet. 1649 - 1654 in Devonshire, England, and died Abt. 1725 in St Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. He married MARY ALICE WILLIAMS 1668 in St Gile, Cripplegate, London, England, daughter of JOHN WILLIAMS and //. She died Abt. 1689 in Stafford County, Virginia.

Notes for THOMAS TRAMMELL:
In the spring of 1671 Thomas sailed from Bristol, England to America.
He signed an agreement 5 March, 1674/75 to work for 4 years for Francis Wyeth.
At the end of that time, he was given 50 acres of land in the colony.
He eventually owned plantations in St Paul's and Overwharton Parishes, both in Stafford County.
At that time, tobacco was brought to the Stafford ports for export.
Thomas died 1720/21.
His estate in Stafford County was probated in 1725/26

In the Minutes of the Council of the General Court of Virginia, dated March 5, 1674/75, page 405, is this entry: "Upon oath of Captain Moore that Thomas Trammell came to this country but for four years - It is ordered that he be acquitted from service and that Mr. Francis Wyeth, his master, do pay him coin (corn?) and clothes according to custom and costs".

Thomas settled in Stafford County, Virginia, and died there, as indicated by his estate record shown by the Index book to be in Will Book 1721-1730 (1750?), page 171.
The Will Book is lost but the Index Book is still available.
The location of the estate record in the Will Book, Page 171, suggests that the death of Thomas occurred in the early 1720's, at age 70 or 75 if we assume he was born (around) 1650.
There is no other known record of Thomas.

Children of THOMAS TRAMMELL and MARY WILLIAMS are:
       i.       DANIEL4 TRAMMELL, b. Abt. 1670; d. Aft. 1680.
       ii.       ELIZABETH TRAMMELL, b. 1672, Stafford County, Virginia; d. Aft. 1686; m. JOHN ROBERTS, Aft. 1685; b. 1657.
4.       iii.       JOHN TRAMMELL, SR., b. February 15, 1674/75, Stafford County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1755, Falls Church, Fairfax County, Virginia.
iv.       ANN TRAMMELL, b. 1681, Virginia.

Generation No. 4

4. JOHN4 TRAMMELL, SR. (THOMAS3, PHILLIP2, THOMAS1) was born February 15, 1674/75 in Stafford County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1755 in Falls Church, Fairfax County, Virginia. He married MARY ANN HUTT September 19, 1698 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, daughter of GERRARD HUTT and ANN HULL. She was born Aft. 1681 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1705.

Notes for JOHN TRAMMELL, SR.:
John Trammell appears in the records of Stafford County, Virginia, in the late 1690's.
He was a constable and sub-sheriff in Westmoreland, Stafford County, Virginia
Since he appears in the records about 23 years after his father Thomas obtained his freedom, we suppose that Thomas married about the time he was liberated or before and had a son John born about 1676, possibly earlier.
In 1694, he was Constable and sub-Sheriff in Westmoreland, Stafford County, Virginia.
He married a French woman named Mary Gerrard Hutt..
John was of legal age and married in 1698, as indicated by this entry in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Book 2, Page 177, dated Oct. 26, 1698: "John Trammell of lower Mackotick, Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, and Mary his wife, sell to John Gardner land in Stafford and Westmoreland County . . . a part of a tract of land devised to said John Trammell by John Williams, deceased."
This record suggests that John's mother was (might have been) a daughter of this John Williams, or else the wife of John may have been the daughter of John Williams. there is no proof that either possibility is true, but both appear to be reasonable assumptions. (Boddie, in Historical Southern Families, Vol. 1, p227, mentions a land sale by John Trammell in 1691.)
There are several records of land transactions by John Trammell during the next several years, to 1705. The records for the period 1709 to 1729 were destroyed by fire during the Civil War, and we lose sight of the Trammells for a time.
He inherited land from his grandfather John Williams and lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia
Four brothers - John, Sampson, Gerrard, and William owned large tracts of land in and around Falls Church, Fairfax County, Virginia.
On 20 March, 1746, by deed of record in Fairfax Courthouse, John Trammell transferred by deed to the Vestry of Truro Parish in Fairfax County a certain parcel of land containing "two acres where the upper church is to be laid off in such a manner as the Vestry shall think proper, to include said church, church yard, spring, and all appurtenances to the said premises."
John Trammell received fifty shillings sterling for the land.
The contract awarded on 9 June, 1753, is the earliest record concerning the building at Falls Church. By order of the Vestry dated 13 October, 1754, John Trammell was paid 320 pounds of tobacco "for grubbing a place for the church."

Notes for JOHN TRAMMELL, JR.:
In 1733 a John Trammell with wife Susanna appears in the records, and we have him until he makes a Will in 1753 (probated in 1755), in which his children are listed.

1753 & 1755, Will written in Fairfax, VA. Abstracts dated 9 Apr 1753-20 May
1755 in Will Book 1742-1801 Book B p 11.

In his will he mentioned his ownership of land that he "purchased of John
Harle," whom I assume to be his father-in-law.

All three sons moved to Loudoun County, Virginia. In 1766 John Trammell of Loudoun County deeded to William of Loudoun County the original land taken up by John Jarl (?) of Stafford County by patent in 1728 and devised by John Trammell, Sr., to John Trammell, Jr., his son.

William (m. Lewis) and Capt. Sampson Trammell listed in book GLEANING FROM VA. HISTORY as being in American Revolution in battle of Stone Mountain, North Carolina.

The Georgia Trammells came down from Virginia into North Carolina and South Carolina then into the territory that is now Lincoln County that was included in the lands ceded by the Creek and Cherokee Indians in 1773 from which Wilkes County was later created. Lincoln County was created Feb. 20, 1796 and contains 291 square miles. It was taken exclusively from Wilkes County, Georgia.

22. THOMAS6 TRAMMELL, ST. (DANIEL5, JOHN4, THOMAS3, PHILLIP2, THOMAS1) was born 1747 in Fairfax County, Virginia, and died September 22, 1823 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He married MARY TURNER December 21, 1775 in Union District, South Carolina, daughter of JAMES TURNER and //. She was born 1758 in Virginia, and died August 28, 1851 in Chambers County, Alabama.

Notes for THOMAS TRAMMELL, ST.:
Thomas Trammell was born in 1747, but the place of his birth is not found in any of the records.
The Bible record which might have contained this information was used to verify a pension application submitted by his widow and was lost.
There is some basis for the belief that he was born in Virginia, but there is no real proof of this His parents were Daniel and Elinor Trammell who moved from the area of Fairfax County, Virginia, to the western part of South Carolina in the early 1760's.
We have no record of the boyhood years of Thomas; the best and virtually only record of his early manhood is found in the affidavit of a certain William Turner which was submitted in support of the claim of the widow for a pension....
Thomas Trammell married Mary Turner, 21 December 1775 in Union District, South Carolina.
She was born in Virginia in 1757, and died in Chambers County, Alabama, 28 August 1851.
We do not know the parents of Mary Turner, but she had a brother, name not known, killed in the Revolution who had a son John, and this John named a son Marmaduke.
This was the name of the Turner who came to Virginia as an immigrant from London in 1635.
It seems probably that the immigrant was the progenitor of the Turner family living in Union District, South Carolina in the 1770's.
Mary had a sister and at least three brothers, all born in Virginia.
The sister, Susannah, married Martin Hammond who served in the Revolution in Brandon's Regiment with several Trammell boys, including Thomas, and several Turners.
Actually, there were four Hammonds, five Trammells and six Turners in Brandon's Regiment....
Thomas Trammell died in Pike County, Georgia, 22 September 1823, and presumably was buried in that part of Pike which became Upson County in 1824.
His grave has not been located and may not be marked.
His Will is found in Will Book 1, Pike County. Mary, his wife, died 28 August 1851 in Chambers County, Alabama, and was buried in the Emory Chapel cemetery.
Inscribed in her gravestone are these words: "Sacred to the memory of Mary Trammell, wife of Thomas Trammell, who departed this life August 28, 1851, in the 94th year of her age. For 60 years a member of Methodist church exemplifying in her life the virtue of the Christian religion.

'Tis finished, 'tis done
The spirit has fled
The Prisoner is gone
The Christian is living
Through Jesus's love
And Gladly receiving
A kingdom above."
The children of Mary and Thomas Trammell were Leah, John, Elinor Burke, Thomas, Farr Harris, Betsy Green, Nancy, Lee Drakeford (or Drakefore Lee), and Milcah.

Died of wounds recieved in the Black Hawk wars.

Black Hawk War. The War placed the Sauk and Fox Indians against volunteer soldiers. The Illinois militia (including Capt. Abraham Lincoln) drove the Sauk and Fox from Illinois. The war was of short duration and affected primarily the Sauk and Fox and residents in the area of the conflict.

The Black Hawk War began soon after the Sauk Indians, led by Black Hawk, faring poorly in Iowa where the government had moved them, recrossed the Mississippi River and moved back to their former cornfields to plant a new crop. As tensions mounted, panicky settlers killed two Indians seeking a parley and bearing a white flag. Black Hawk, enraged, began killing white settlers.

Sauk followers of Black Hawk were massacred at the mouth of the Bad Axe River in Wisconsin by Illinois militia led by General Henry Atkinson. Old men, women, and children were all killed without regard for pleas of mercy or white flags.

Black Hawk, deserted by his Winnebago allies, surrendered, thus ending the Black Hawk War.

Sauk and Fox Indians agreed in 1804 to cede their lands east of the Mississippi River to the US for $1000 annually. Indian Chief "Black Hawk" (1767-1838) repudiated this agreement and fought against the US in the War of 1812. Cession of the disputed territory was again arranged by treaties signed in 1815 and 1816, and in 1823 the majority of the Sauk and Fox settled west of the Mississippi. When white settlers began to occupy the vacated lands, however, Black Hawk again refused to reognize the agreement. In April 1832 the Indians returned to th edisputed territory. The white settlers shot an emissary from Blank Hawk and the so-called Black Hawk War began. The Indians were defeated near the Wisconsin River on 21 July 1832, and again at the Bad Axe River on 1 & 2 Aug; Black Hawk surrendered August 27. The Sauk and Fox were settled soon afterward on a reservation near Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where Black Hawk died.

In July of 1860 Noah Webster Boone made a trip to Rolla, Missouri, to obtain supplies for his little store. She married WILLIAM PRYOR, son of JOSEPH PRIOR and MARY FLEMING. He was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, and died September 09, 1833 in San FElipe de, Austin, now Austin County, Texas.

Notes for WILLIAM PRYOR:
Notes for WILLIAM PRYOR:
What little we know of William Pryor, is contained in his Will and the probate of his estate. He made his Will on 19th day of January 1832 at his farm house in Austin's Colony in the presence of Oliver Jones, Doct. James B Miller, William H Jack, William Roberts and Thomas Jefferson Chambers, under authority of Horatio Chrisman, first alcalde of the jurisdiction.

William Barrett Travis wrote in his diary that he sat with "Old Pryor" on the 9th of September and attended his funeral in San Felipe de Austin on the 10th of September 1833.

Pryor's Will states that he was born in Botetourt Co. VA and was now a colonist in Austin's Colony. He declared that he was married to Besty Trammell and they had 11 children, five who died unmarried and six living; Stacey, wife of William Barton, Trammell, who he believes to be in the United States of the North, Polly wife of John Hensley, Harriett contracted in marriage to Noel F Roberts, Rosy believed to be in the United States of the North, and Besty
youngest and only maiden daughter. He appoints William Barton as curator and
states that his wife is dead.

He then disowned his son, stating that his son obeyed neither the laws of God or man, that he had wounded his feelings, stained his honor and took his property. He left Betsy, Polly and Rosy (if she returns from the United States) each a labor of land. He left 2 labors to Harriet and her children, directing that Harriet was to have complete control and authority of her inheritence. Her husband, Noel F Roberts was forbidden to inherit, possess or enjoy her share of the estate.

This will was "mislaid" until 1850 when Z Hunt applied to the courts for administrtor of the estate and authority to settle it after the death of Thomas Whittington.

In October 1833, one month after the death of William Pryor, William Barton was appointed curator. It seems that very little was done to settle the estate at that time. On 7 July 1834, Besty age 12 years and 9 months, was married William Roberts, son of Noel F. Roberts from his first marriage. By 1835, Thomas Whittington applied for and recieved administration of the estate. In February of 1835, Whittington ask the courts for permission to sell three quarters of the league to settle debts owed by the estate. A notice was placed on the courthouse door in San Felipe de Austin advertising the sale and requesting bids. The winning bidder was William Barrett Travis at 23-1/2 cents per acre for 3110 acres, a total of $731.05. In August of 1839, Elizabeth and Rosanna sold to John York two labors of land on the Brazos for $2000.

In 1838, Thomas Whittington explained to the courts that the settlement of the estate was delayed because of the Revolution and that he had filed a suit in Harrisburg County relating to the estate. He prayed for a continuence and got
it. The estate was not settled until late 1850.

In November of 1870, John M Hensley applied for a Pension for the State of Texas for serving in the Texas Army during the Revolution in 1836. He states that he joined Capt. John Byrd's company before the fall of the Alamo and
became detached from that company and was present and participated in the Battle of San Jacinto under the command of Col. Sidney Sherman. He was honorably discharged in June of 1836. His application stated that he lived in Austin Co, TX in 1870. Johnson Hensley of Austin County and William P Huff, a citizen of Austin County since 1825, testified in behalf of John M Hensley. He was grant an annual pension of $250.

In May 1874, Andrew J Hensley testified that Johm M was still indigent and living in Waller County . Other papers filed over the next few years continue toshow his residence in Hempstead, Waller Co.

The Congress of Texas passed a new Pension Act in July 1876 reducing the pension. John M Hensley was now drawing $37.50 per quarter. ($150 a year). In Sept 1878, John Hensley received a cetificate stating that he was an approved pensioner, but that the appropriation was exhauasted and from April 15 1878 to Sept 15th 1878 $75.00 was omitted.

On July 2nd 1887 in Brown County, John M Hensley now a resident of Hamilton County reapplied for his pension.

Notes for GERRARD JAMES TRAMMELL:
"The name 'Gerrard,' was at the mercy of the census takers and record keepers and was variously spelled.
In Virginia, it was first spelled 'Garrard' as was the Garrard family of Virginia.
It is thought that John, old Phillip's grandfather, married Mary Garrard, but not proven.
Gerrard accumulated land in Washington County into the late 1850s, although he might have been suffering from failing health, or diminishing mental capacity.
In Oct 1849, in Washington County records, George S. Trammell, was made guardian of Henry S. Trammell, and Henry's assets were listed.
Henry was Gerrard's youngest son, and George was an older son.
Henry was still in his father's home when the 1850 census was taken, as was his older nephew, Fields Gerrard, whose name was corrupted to 'Felix G.'
Fields was also enumerated at his father's home.
It is said by a descendant that Gerrard's daughters were all redheaded. "

"Someone in Missouri found the family Bible in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It says Garrard married Sarah Maulding. We had heard that he first married a Cherokee named Hannah Carr. The 'fact' there was Indian blood in the Trammell line was passed down through different, unknown to each other, branches of this family.

Notes for MARCUS LAFAYETTE HOPE HARRY:
Marcus L H Harry was only 14 years old when his father died leaving him an orphan. At first his uncle David Harry was appointed guardian. After three months, the Court decreed that David Harry had not performed his duty as administrator of the estate and removed him from that postion leaving it vacant. A few months later another man was appointed adminstrator. Over the next few years with bad administrators and false surveys Marcus's land was sold for $500.

He commenced life for himself at age 14 with two horses, two cows and calves and five head of hogs and a certificate for 640 acres in Hill County. At 18 years old he hired out for a years schooling. At twenty he was working on the ranch owned by Mrs. Elizabeth (Pryor) Roberts, widow of William Roberts son of Noel F. Roberts.

He was 22 yrs old when he married Elizabeth. The next year they were able to produce 10 bales of cotton and 400 bushels of corn. At the begining of the Civil War, Marcus owned enough land and stock to exempt him from military service. Later he joined a company of scouts and couriers who were runnning cotton to Matamoras. By the close of the war, he owned a good home and 1000 head of stock. By 1870, he had around 4000 head. In 1885, Marcus owned 2400 acres of land on both sides of the Brazos River in Austin & Ft. Bend Co. with about 400 under cultivation. He donated land to a local church for the building and a cemetery, but he and his wife were buried on his ranch. His will left his estate to his three daughters.
