Yes I believe I read that Charles Baynard Trail was consul at Versailles ,France during World War II. This would have been a vital position at that time. Any notes you could offer on his career would be of most interest. On a personal note, It is ironic for me that Robert Traill Spence was also the first Commander of the first American flotilla to build a fort on the African continent when he planted the flag in what today is Liberia. My own father was a captain in the U.S. navy who became a diplomat as well and he specialized in Africa and he eventually became a U.S. Ambassador to that continent. It is also interesting that Robert Traill of Portsmouth,New Hampshire was one of the first to be awarded a brewing license in that area as was William Trail(who married Abigail Hays) when he was one of the first granted a tavern license in Frederick County,Md.
