This James Trail apparently resided at some point about Port Royal. He was certainly of a separate branch from the Trails who were residing inland around Spartanburg,South Carolina at that time ,having recently migrated down from Montgomery County,Maryland. The Spartanburg Trails were ardent revolutionaries whereas the James Trail of Port Royal was listed as a loyalist in 1783. The inland settlements were very much separated from the harbor cultures of Charleston and Port Royal at that time. I however have heard that there was a James Trail in the records at that time who was witnessing many deeds and thus could have been a lawyer. The James Trail associate of Lord William Campbell could well have been this lawyer as there was great concern for the safety of his books during the unrest that was taking place. If records show this James Trail witnessing deeds for the Spartanburg Trails that could be a significant connection between branches of the family. Has anyone collected Trail records from South Carolina? This James Trail of Port Royal resided at South Carolina at least from 1775 to 1783 and as impotant as he must have been, direct associate of Governor Campbell, there should be many records of him in the archives. Any help from South carolina rsearchers greatly appreciated.
