Back to Trails and Nichols connections in Scotland.
I was looking for James Nicholsons who may be the witnesses in the deed you referred to, George. There was a James Nicholdson who married Elspeth Anand and their son James was chr. in 1632 in Aberdeen, Aberdeen. That prompted trying to find if there was a connection with the Jean Annan who married Rev. Robert Traill. But no clear connection so far.Do you know who Jean's father was?
Then there was a James Nicholson who married Margaret Millar and had son James christened 1640 in St. Andrews.Hemay very well be one of the James Nicholsons who witnessed the deed you mentioned, George. They also may have been the parents of Jeane Nicoll, or relatives anyway--the Jeane Nicoll who married Andro Millar in 1661 in St. Andrews. This shows a Nichol/Nicholson--Millar connection which may have continued in Maryland.
A James Nicholson and Elspet Crumie were married in 1646 in St. Andrews. This may be a second James, different from the one who married Margaret Millar above with son James chr. in 1640 at St. Andrews, and a second witness, as you mentioned there were two James Nichoolsons.Or it may be Margaret died and he married Elspet. This brings to mind that a Johne Trail married Janet Crumie in 1642 in Ceres. There were so many Johns around then that it is hard to say which family he is from, but he would have been part of the Traill clanthere. He and Janet had children Janet 1643, John 1645 and Beatrix 1649.
Latter an Isobell Nicoll married David Broune in 1670 in St. Andrews, possibly a sister or cousin of Jeane Nicolle, wife of Andro Millar (above).Remembering that the land was sold to a Mr. Broune, that may point to a family connection. There is also a possible Broune connection with the William and Alexander Bell family.A William Bell married Margaret Brown in 1621, though it was over in Dysart, Fife--not so close to St. Andrews. But they might have been parents of William Bell (Beall) who married Christen Trail in 1639 in St. Andrews.William the Elder and ?Margaret? also had a son Alexander Bell who married Margaret Ramsay in 1646 in St. Andrews and fathered Alexander and others who went to Maryland.
The Bessie Traill who married John Millar in 1654 (parents of the Georgeand John Millar in Maryland most probably) would be either an aunt or a little more distant relative of David of Kinnell, depending on who her parents were.If her parents were Walter and Kathryn Fleming Traill, their Bessie was born in 1629 in St. Andrews, Fife.Kathryn apparently had no more recorded children, and possibly the same Walter married Agnes Cowpar in 1640 in Kilconquhar, Fife. The other possibility is the David Traill who married Janet Cowpar in 1640 (grandfather of David of Kinnell). He may have been the same David who married Bessie Mortone in 1633 and had daughter Bessie in 1634. The mother apparently died as no more children are in the records. If this is Bessie's father George Millar would be David's first cousin, David's father James being half-brother to Bessie.Or it could be a different David Traill who married Bessie Mortone first, then married Euphame Toddie in 1635 in Ceres, Fife and had Janet 1637, Andro 1640 and Thomas 1642.Both Walter and one David married Cowpar gals in 1640.Elsie Ritchie has listed them as brothers. At least they would be close, like cousins.A further connection with Millars is that Walter and Agnes had a son Andrew Traill in Ceres in 1641, possibly the Andrew who married Janet Millar in 1665 in Carnbee, Fife--not far from Ceres. They had children Andrew 1673,Agnes1676, and James 1678.Otherwise he may be Andrew, son of David Traill and Euphame Toddie, b 1640 in Ceres. The other Andrew married Agnes Daw and had Andrew 1669and unnamed in 1672 in Ceres.
Shifting to the Cowpars, I was not able to find a Janet the right age born in St. Andrews. But there was a Janet Cowper born in 1619 in Edinburgh to James Cowper and Agnes Thomsone.Thinking of the MD land belonging toa Thomson from Edinburgh plus Agnes Cowper (wife of Walter Trail above) being named Agnes made me wonder if this could be both Janet and Agnes's family. Was ita William Thomson who patented the land first, George? He may have been Agnes Thomsone's relative and preceeded the Millars to the area.
The other Trail-Millar marriage not checked fully is David Millar and Elspet Traill marrying in 1665 in Kingbarns, Fife, just south east of St. Andrews parish.
Just as a note of interest:William Bell, husband of Christen Trail, may have remarried the year after she died in1653.There is a record of aWilliam Bell marrying Bessie Carmichell 22 Feb 1654 in St. Andrews, Fife.
Rather a mess of information, but that is what we need to look at to sort out these families.
