Dear George,James of Stirling Castle was a supporter of William the third and his wife Mary, and returned from Holland when William landed in grt Britain. James the second (the former Duke of York) was his father in law and a Roman Catholic and his enemy, also his uncle through William's mother who was James the second's sister. Whoever the James Trail was who was supporting the King,(which King) he was not supporting James the second and William the third at the same time. Your David strikes me as Protestant for one thing, so it cant be James the Second in that decade, nor did James the second have any right to grant favours by 1704, but William the thirds sister in law, known as good Queen Anne did. William died in 1702, and his wife was already dead, so her sister Anne took over. She indeed would have honoured a promise that William had made. 1692 would be right for a favour granted by William the third, More commonly called William of Orange. He was not only the English ruler but the Dutch ruler as well. he defeated his father in law at a particularly bloody battle called the battle of the Boyne in 1690 in Ireland. I think the quickest way to sort this out is the English Public Record office at Kew which will have the records of William's grants to his major supporters.I would however be tackling The hague for their records on this King's grants
