I agree that in most cases the repeat naming of a child was when the first child had died but there are also instances documented where this was'nt the case. In fact Edmonston researchers state that the Archibald Edmonston who established David Trail in Maryland was the younger brother of an Archibald who inherited the Edmonston estate back in Scotland. Furthermore, in Lt. Col. James Trail, we are talking about a man who had 21 children with 3 different wives. David Trail of Maryland not only would have been 20 years older than the David who married Lillias Watson,he would have had a different mother and possibly may have already left for American opportunity before David (who married Lillias) was even born. James of Stirling was married to Anne Stewart in 1670. David Trail of Maryland was born in 1677. He would have been a fourth or even fifth child. James of Stirling's wealth would have been filtered before it reached David but I think that notion misleads us from the real chase.
David did not appear in the records of Maryland until he was 27 years old, most probably coming over between the age of 20 to 25. Archibald Edmonston was the son in law of Ninian Beall. Ninian Beall was the leading figure of New Scotland Hundred. Ninian acquired thousands of acres there by headrights for transporting people to the colonies from Scotland. Most of these people were Scottish Presbyterians like Ninian himself. It is stated that Ninian seated the vast majority of these settlers on the Eastern Branch(Anacostia River) right where David Trail first appears and makes his home. David was living there as early as 1705 and it was not until 1714 that Archibald Edmonston patented and named "David's Industry". And not until 1720 when David was able to purchase this tract. David may well have come over with wealth given him by his father but could have squandered it or lost it over the course of 10 years in any way just as the David who married Lillias Watson lost his fortune in a shipwreck. Remember David of Maryland lived on the edge of the frontier, there were no settlements west of him. That is why David of Maryland's case is so unusual in that he resided there for some 10 years before entering some sort of indentured service or agreement with Archibald Edmonston.
Now for the wild card Elsie. Possibly you may remember an ancient article taken from the Baltimore Sun back in 1854. A copy was sent me by our distant cousin Vivian Trail.(I hope you are still out there Vivian). The article states that the Trails of Frederick County(these are the descendants of the David Trail we are discussing) descend from a James Trail who was granted land in Maryland by the King for his help in financing the King's wars. It's difficult to make out the year of the grant but it appears to be 1692. It states that this James Trail was a man of great wealth. Just as you stated on the previous message that James of Stirling was a man of great wealth. If James was an astute business man would'nt he be quite aware of the tobacco opportunities in Maryland. Maybe he had intentions for David of Maryland that never totally panned out due to the many risks and pitfalls that existed at that time. There seems to be alot of pieces here wanting to form or even solve a puzzle.
