First American Trails
A tremendous amount of research and correspondence has finally uncovered the story of the first American Trails. First there was Robert Trail who was granted land in Delaware in 1676. It is not clear if Robert came to Del. via Somerset County,Md. although 2 of his closest friends ,Edward Southern and John Manlove, were both some of Somersets earliest citizens. Southern's family had come up through Accomack County,Va. Robert was a son of our great soldier, Lt. Col. James Trail who married Mary Hamilton at Killyleah Castle in Northern Ireland back in 1647. Robert left part of his estate to William Hamilton. While Robert was in Del. his younger sister,Elanore, married their first cousin, Rev. William Trail, back in Ireland. William was the son of the great Presbyterian minister Rev. Robert Trail who presided over Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh beginning in 1647. Also while Robert of Delaware was residing there, back in Ireland rev. William was thrown into jail for his beliefs for a year. Robert of Del. apparently orchestrated the rescue of his sister Elanore and her Husband to Somerset,Md. through his acquaintance with Somerset's leading citizen at that time,William Stevens. Elanore arrived in Md. with her family abt. 1683 and eventually named a land tract of theirs "Killyleah". Robert however died in 1685. Robert was still young and orphaned sons. One was James and David was another who went to live with Elanore in Somerset.
