Very interesting Elsie. This contribution by Vivian greatly interested me as well but did not parallel any research I've done. There is no record of any such land grants in the Maryland Archives to a James Trail and certainly not of the magnitude put forth. David Trail of New Scotland also does'nt resemble a family member of such landed wealth. David was a hired hand for many years in New Scotland before having the means to purchase a modest 170 acre tract from Archibald Edmonston. This tract he apparently been working for Archibald for some years prior to purchasing it. David purchased another 100 acres 10 years later and that was it. His sons Charles, David Jr., and James acquired more in their lives but only a few hundred acres each except for James who was able to compile some 600 acres over the course of his life.David was over 40 years old before he obtained his tract. I can only wonder if this James of Scotland who was granted this wealth of land for services rendered the king. possibly sold it off to Lord Baltimore from Britain or maybe the history books have omitted something.
