According to Hossack Capt Peter Winchester was probably the son of Peter Winchester who in 1638 was Collector of customs in Kirkwall. The name comes from the southern shore of the Moray Forth. John Winchester an englishman came to Scotland in the train of James I, and was Bishop of Moray 1438-1453.
The Bishops sons and nephews established near Elgin.

"Capt Peter Winchester was the owner of the St Peter, a trading ship in times of peace and a privateer in times of War, thus each return was hailed by the Town Council as an opportunity to replenish the Burghs stock of gunpowder."
In 1669 on returning from a long voyage ,Capt Peter Winchester was called as a witness as to whether one of his seaman, Peter Stewart, was the father of a child born on the 9 March 1669 to Stewarts wife.
Winchester declared that the ship St Peter had sailed from Elwick Bay on the last day of March 1668. Stewart was fined by the session for leaving home too soon, and his wife made to sit on the stool of repentence.
So it sounds to me that the voyage was more than twelve months long.
Capt Winchester married firstly Jean Baikie of Tankerness, who died in April 1674. He then married Helen Stewart 6 March 1677. He drowned on the 15 Oct 1677 nr Fraserburgh.
His relict, Helen Stewart sold to Patrick Traill of Elsness
in May 1678 french canfes and brandy to the total value of 73 10sh.

There is a Rogers connection to the Westness family in the mid 18th C.
