Dear George, I found this on the Pottinger forum and thought it must be the same John although the record is a year later still it may help
John Pottinger of Sittingbourne is listed as a passenger on
The Maryland Merchant from Bristol, England to Maryland September 24, 1684.
His fellow passengers are Nathaniel Lawly, John Watson, Isaac William, Caesar Hoskins, Samuel Veale and John Fisher.
The main Pottinger family were London based and merchants but there was a branch in Ireland and one in Orkney where they arrived in the 16th century. Yes they did own ships Elsie
