Hi Gail, I have come across a couple of most interesting records lately that seem to indicate David Trail Sr. of Maryland may have come from the Orkney line. First is the record of an old shipping account of Skipper Patrick Trail dated 1670's at Orkney. In the account he refers to personal gifts sent to his children by Lady Margaret Buxton who was married to Arthur Buchanan. The second record is a petition dated 1694 at Deale,England where Tobias Bowles resided. In the petition Tobias Bowles name appears adjacent to that of Andrew Trale. This Andrew was apparently the son of aforementioned Skipper Patrick Traill and had just left the navy. At this time Tobias was just starting his ventures into Maryland as a merchant. In 1712 there is record at the British Parliament where Tobias Bowles is recommended to Parliament by a Merchant Committee to be appointed Governor of Maryland because Tobias has lived in that province and knows well of their situations. David Trail Sr. apparently had a large account with Tobias at Maryland and suffered a law suit by Tobias for non payment about 1720. My thinking is Andrew Traill would have been well informed of Tobias Bowles ventures when he was associated with him in 1694 and may have even worked for him as a mariner having just left the navy. I'm sure you can see how these records have caught my interest.
