At first I thought the same as you but since then I have seen many instances in the records where people were referred to as "Scotchmen","Dutchmen", "Germans", etc. and not only had these people been in America for many years but sometimes they were 2nd generation Americans and had never left the colonies. Before the Revolution these people held on to their heritage. Peter Trale of Devon resided 5 miles from the second busiest port in Britain during the 17th century, that being Topsham. I don't think he was a remnamnt of ancient Geoffrey Trailly but rather a Scotchman employed as a mariner or shipwright come down to Devon where the work was plentiful. His son James would likely have considered himself a Scotchman as well.
