Good information, Elsie,
Something that occurs to me is the Leslie family possible connection for the tailor-apprentice David Traill. His father in Rothney, Aberdeen was living close to a Leslie family area.the old maps show this. Then the apprenticeship was with a tailor named Leslie. When you look through the list of this tailor's other apprentices you notice they came from Aberdeen and the north. So he seems to be connected to the north.
In the military of that time the Leslies were very much involved as leaders, such as the following.
Col. David Leslie: The fifth son of Patrick Leslie, Lord Lindores, and Lady Jean Stewart, he joined the army of Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden around 1630 as a captain in the regiment of Alexander Leslie. By 1634, he was colonel of a cavalry regiment. Leslie returned to Scotland in 1640 to join the Army of the Covenant raised for the Bishops' Wars but did not take part in any fighting. When the Covenanters made an alliance with the English Parliamentarians in 1644, Leslie was appointed lieutenant-general to Alexander Leslie, Earl of Leven. The Covenanters marched into England against the Royalists in January 1644. At the battle of Marston Moor, Leslie led a brigade of Scottish horse in support of Cromwell's Ironsides on the left wing of the Allied army. His flank attack tipped the scales in Cromwell's favour in the struggle between the Ironsides and Prince Rupert's cavaliers. (See this site for further information on his life - www.british-civil-wars.co.uk/index_l.htm#leven)
So David Traill, the Lt. Col, may have been known to Col David Leslie from Sweden service days. Also he may be the son of James of Rothney as you suggested, Elsie. He then would also probably be the David Traill listed as musketeer in the 1624 records.
