Dear Gail,
There were seven Robert Traills in Edinburgh in the 1640's. The rev. Robert Traill, is no 1 just promoted to Greyfriars and married to Jean Annand in 1639.His second son was named Robert also and also became a cleric died in Westminster England.
John' son Robert the Tailor is No 3 born in 1608 did marry late in 1652 to janet Steill had 3 children born in Perth, and is probably the Robert who died in Leith during the plague there in 1655. His last child born in Perth was born in 1655. Because of the plague and the civil war the Government had shifted the treasury to Perth, and many businesss involved with thegovt. went with them. Robert No 4 is Robert traill of Orkney most likely to have gone with his elder brother Thomas as the regiement was raised at Caithness just opposite the Orkney Isles. He did not come back to Orkney but was recorded as lending money to an Orkney businesman in the 40s, while resident in Edinburgh. Robert No 5 is Robert the Cordiner who married Janet Dunning in 1608 apprenticed to David Dunning in 1601.He died 1645.His sonRobert (no6) , married his cousin Margaret in 1641 marriage bed is in Scottish museum with theTs on either side of the crest. He died in 1689 Their son Robert (no 7) was born in Dundee 1643 and married a Margaret Prince had no children and died in 1694 leaving his all to his sister Isobel and her husband Robert Bowes. As out of all these Robert of Orkney is the only one with any connection with the Spens family. That is the spelling for Robert's senior officer and so there would have been some contact between Robert and Elspeth. They only had one daughter. Hope this covers all the Roberts. Robert of Monifieth was only 16 so I have not included him in the list but have included younger ones connected to those in the city to show I have followed through with the research. Elsie
