Traills who served in Sweden
We know well of Col. Thomas Traill of Orkney who served in the Swedish Army during the 30 years War but there were others as well. In the Regiment of Col. James Spence in 1624 at Sweden listed as "Rottmastares"( a rank below Corporal but just above "Pikeman" and "Muskateers") were Thomas Traill,David Traill, and Robert Traill. They were likely young and related. In the same regiment as a Muskateer was John Traill. I don't know if he was the same John Traill who witnessed the will of Col. David Ramsey at Sweden in 1652. This David Ramsey was the son of the late General Major James Ramsey who had been the former Governor of Hanau in Hessen Germany. David Ramsey left money to the old College of St. Andrews. This record is interesting because all the birthnames of these Traills are the first names of the first Traills to appear in America. The connection to Germany and Sweden is also ironic in that we find Robert Traill of Delaware settling in what was first Swedish territory and his will was witnessed by and executed by Germans.
