Katherine,

I did some research on Gardiner years ago, so your post made me sit up and take notice! The problem now is to find what I collected and I can't so far, but I do have a couple things you may not know.

1. Tracy, Gardiner, editor of the Lansingburgh Gazette, married Catherine Lansing, (this is where you get your middle name) dau of Cornelius, Esq., in Lansingburgh (6-2/19.) This text is from the book "10,000 Vital Records of Central NY, 1809-1850 by Fred Q. Bowman and is found in any good genealogy room at local libraries. The 6 in this date refers to the newspaper the information was taken from and the 2/19 is the month and day. There is no year listed. Sorry!

2. Catherine and Gardiner are buried in Renesselaer Co. with some of their children. Lansingburgh Cemetery. Here again the info is from a newspaper Lansingburgh Gazette, September 24, 1847: "Mrs. Gardner Tracy, age 66, died September 21, 1847." Lansingburgh Gazette, June 1, 1849: "Gardiner Tracy, age 72, died May 25, 1849."

3. Gardiner and Catherine spent some time here in Oneida Co., NY, specifically Utica, NY. The following is a paragraph from the "Memorial History of Utica" and, I am sorry, but it has been so long since I did this that I do not have auther or publisher for this book, but here is the paragraph:

"Gardiner Tracy came to Utica from Lansingburgh, where he had conducted a paper and was prominent as a politician. Here he established himself in printing and bookselling. He had a vigorous and acquisitive mind, and was an extensive reader, being especially well informed in American history.
Ardent and fearless in temperament his religious faith was strong, and as a citizen he maintained the character of a highly respected and useful one. He died May 25, 1849, at the age of seventy-two, having given up business some two years before his death. He left a son, George Tracy, who succeeded to it, besides another son, who returned to Lansingburg, and three daughters."

As far as I can find out, Gardiner and Catherine both died here, but were sent home to Lansingburgh for burial.

Gardiner did publish a newspaper here in Utica, also called the Gazette. When I find my "stuff", I'll get back to you.

In the meantime, Good Luck and keep the faith. You never know when or where something is going to show up!

Carol
