Mary Towson/Mary Stamper

I am trying to determine the maiden name of Mary Towson, born about 1756 in Rowen, North Carolina, married Jacob Adams January 7, 1777, and died about 1823 in Reddies River, Wilkes, North Carolina. Prior to marrying Jacob, she was widowed with two children. She has been listed as both Mary Towson and Mary Stamper, and I am trying to find out which of those is her maiden name. Any information is appreciated.
