Thank you so much for your information! I'm still stuck at the same place for my Bailey/Bayles. I'd heard from my aunt (a Beatrice also) that the Bailey farm was still in the area, or at least part of it, and that we were descended from those Baileys. The farm was called Bailiwick when it was a working farm. I never did find out exactly where it was, just somewhere down Cedar Swamp Road in Brookville (I get a little confused, having moved away from there when I was a child). So thank you for a better view of where the farm was located.
My aunt passed away last December, so unless my cousins know, I won't be able to find anything about it. The only records I've used are those on microfilm through an LDS Family History Center, so it might be time to join the Brooklyn Historical Society (formerly the Long Island Historical Society). I've belonged to the NYG&B on and off, belong again, but all of their collection has been moved into the main branch of the NY Public Library in the city. I don't know if members are still able to access the more fragile documents.
On my next visit to LI, I'll have to try to see if I can get some more info from my cousin - or look up some Baileys who might remain in the area. Your giving me some of the names you've found might be some help also, given that they're a century earlier than what I have. I wonder if the original deed books are still in existence; another cousin has a set of transcribed and printed books that were published in the 1940s I think. But they're abstracts; I know from doing title search work that sometimes much more family information was included in the older deeds. I just don't know if they're held at the town, at the county, or if they're in Queens county or in archives. It's funny, various people in our family have been looking for the origin of Janette Bayles/Bailey for about a hundred years!
