There wer six Towns brothers and one sister who came to America from England before 1710. They first settled in Virginia. These brothers were James, whose wife came with him; John,Samuel, Thomas, Henry, and William.
The sister, listed only as Miss Towns married Baron De Graffenried, who brought a company of "Switzens", over from Bern, Switzerland in 1710 and settled on the Neuse River in North Carolina and founded the town of "Newberne"named after his home, Berne in Switzerland, They had two daughters who married brothers of John C. Calhoun, the great South Carolina statesman

We know that the name of the six brothers and sister was spelled Townes when they settled in Virginia. However records prove that when they migrated down in to North and South Carolina and Georgia the spelling of the name became Towns.

Our ancestor is John and he was born in England sometimes around 1689. We know John was married and died in Virginia. We do not know his wife, however they had one son David.

David married Priscilla Proctor, the 9th, of September 1754 in Brunswick County, Virginia. They had the following children

Richard,James,David, Elisha and John

Their son James married in 1777 in Brunswick County, Virginia, wife unknown, however James children were born in Warren County , North Carolina, as follows:Daniel, Drury, James, Benjamin, Willis D, John W., Martha and Elizabeth.

James' son James was born in 1789 married July 8, 1819 in Madison county, Georgia, to Elizabeth Strickland , one of their children was James Daniel Towns, Sr. Born Sept. 12, 1827 probably in Madison , Morgan County , Ga.
