Names Pinkney and Morris in Townley Family Line
Naming patterns in the mid 1700s required that the pattern of family relationships be used.Thomas Pickney Townley, eldest son of Henry Townly and Agnes Rich Townley bears the name Pickney. This should, by custom be the name of the paternal grandfather.Usually it would be his mother's father or his father's dad.A later child was clearly named Henry Morris Townley. Both these names need to be located along with the Townley family members, especially Thomas. Some have speculated that Thomas' middle name was that of a Revolutionary War hero, and there is one by that name. However, the time line does not fit.General Thomas Pickney was not a war hero at the time of Thomas Pickney Townley's birth. There has to be a closer link that this.Other names come to mind from the Lancashire England heritage, especially Richmond, the name of a beloved tutor of this period for the Townley children who lived in the Townley Hall, Lancashire District.I would appreciate any ideas that you might have concerning the origin of these names in the family tree.As Michael has done, I have researched all the colonial links and feel that our Thomas just might not have been in the colonies prior to 1749.If anyone has an idea that can be documented to link the families together, that data would be helpful. Thanks, Azalia Moore (great2 granddaughter of Mary Townley Keeton, daughter of Henry and Agnes Rich Townley.
