Robert E. Lee and George Washington share a common ancestor in Mary Townley (b.1614) of Stone Edge, England. She married Augustine Warner of Norwich and emigrated to Va. in 1628. Their daughter Sarah married 1st cousin Laswrence Townley. They produced Alice, who married Charles Grymes. That union produced Lucy, who married Henry Lee in 1753. Their son Henry (Light Horse Harry) Lee who, with second wife Anne Carter Hill had 4th son Robert Edward Lee. The George Washington connection goes back to the Mary/Augustine marriage. They had a son, Augustine II. With wife Mildred Reade, came daughter Mildred Warner. She married Lawrence Washington, and their son Augustine's secpond marriage, tp Mary Ball, produced a first child, George Washington in 1732. Hope this is useful.
