Pachal / Pascal / Paschal Townes--Townes Pass in Death Valley

There is a Townes Pass in Death Valley named for Pachal Townes, they say. Pachal could be Pascal or Paschal. This Townes was a 49er (that's 1849, the Gold Rush), and he supposedly led a group out through this pass, which was then named for him. There are several Townes men with that name. Any hints on how to identify this one would be appreciated.
