Stephanie: I apologize for not checking this site more frequently. There is a Towey Clan which meets every 3 years in Ballaghaderreen, and I am designated to help with genealogy questions about our surname. You might be interested in checking out our web site at www.//, and click on "Enter" and then "About Us" section. There is also a section "Tracing Roots ..." which provides information on where to look for records of our extended family. (Or in Google, simply type in Towey Clan)

I haven't yet been able to find your great-aunt Winifred Towey in Rhode Island, although she is on the list of Boston ship arrivals in July 1901 aboard the New England. She is not listed in the U.S. census for 1910, so perhaps she had married by then.

John Towey married Marg. Gallaher on Feb 7, 1872 at St. Nathy's in Ballaghaderreen, and they had 6 children who were baptized there: James, bap. Dec 21, 1872; Catherine, Apr 28, 1874; Bridget, Mar 18, 1876; Thomas, Nov 11, 1877; Margaret, Oct 17, 1879; and Winnie, Jul 22, 1883. Only the first 2 were registered with the General Record Office, although I was unable to view any of these records after 1880 because the Mormon Family History Library microfilms are only for the period 1864 to 1880. All of these available records give the family's residence as Redridge, which is part of the townland named Cloonlumney near Ballaghaderreen. In the 1901 Census at, only John, 56; Margaret, 50; Bridget, 22; Margaret, 19; and Winifred, 19, are listed.

Come join the clan at Durkin's in Ballaghaderreen on May 15 & 16 for our next reunion. Information about signing up will soon be posted on the web site. Best regards, Dick Towey
