Are you sure Ralph was the son of William Toward? There is a Ralph Toward several years older, son of William Toward and Elizabeth Pattison, who was a general labourer in 1881, aged 70, born in Whickham, Co. Durham in 1811. This is a different Ralph from the master mariner born in 1815. Could there have been two named William as well as two named Ralph?
