Thanks for responding so quickly,Jim. I seem to have missled you slightly, my name is David and I come from Falkirk. We spell our name Towe and pronounce it the same as you do yours (even though everyone else says "Toe" which is realy annoying).
As to the origin of the surname. I have a friend whose name is Towse. He researched his name and found out that Towse,Towe,Tow and a few other spellings which I can't remember, are all from the same root "Toughe". The first person recorded had the surname Towe and he lived in the 13th century in a village somewhere near Inverness (I can't remember its name). Unfortunatly I have now lost contact with him and can't find out any more.
As far as I know there is no family lore about ancestors emmigrating to the "New World". However what with the "Highland Clearances "of the 18th & 19th centuries it would seem unlikly that none had.
I hope this answers some of your questions, although it will probably provoke more.
If I can help you in any way please don't hesitate to ask
Yours
David Towe
