Eva,
My grandfather, Lucio Tovar (born 1892), was from San Luis Potosi. He later traveled north as a young man and was married with 2 children Sabitas & Santiago. His 1st wife (name unknown) passed from a severe fever & related illness. It was in Torreon, where he worked and met his 2nd bride - Rene Cruz Rodriguez. Her father did not grant them permission to marry - so they eloped & ran for the border!
On to Texas they had 8 children, all born in Weslaco, Tx. My father, Macario Tovar, said as he was growing up - his father never talked of his past but did talk of San Luis Potosi. But never why he traveled north to the Torreon area, and away from San Luis Potosi or the "family". Maybe that is where he lost his wife. We don't really know. In fact, he would not talk about it!
Not trying to be mysterious here, but maybe it was the politics at the time - a bad family rift - or he just needed to get away. We may never know - but everyone says he was from San Luis Potosi.
In 1950, my father came to Elgin, Il. (40 miles west of Chicago - married my mother Audrey, of German/Irish decent, they had 6 children of which I am the 2nd.
