I was always told that in catholic countries, like France, it was common to give a child at least one saint name, with the idea that the saint thus honored would then be sure to watch over the child.
Orphans need more protection than children with both parents. Hence the name "Toussaint," which means, literally, "All Saints."
That is why there are so many people with the name Toussaint.
