For several years I have been seeking a Mary Tousey who might have married Joseph Churchill in Wethersfield, Connecticut, on May 13, 1674. It now appears that this Mary Tousey did not exist and that Joseph Churchill actually married Mary Catlin. Posting 2615 on the Churchill Forum explains this. In the course of my search I established that there were actually three early Tousey families in America rather than one as has previously been supposed. This is explained in posting 2608 on the Churchill Forum, which remains valid except for the portions relating to Mary Tousey as the wife of Joseph Churchill. While searching for Mary Touseys I was also looking for Thomas Touseys who might have been the Thomas Touseys who emigrated to America. From the LDS (Mormon) International Genealogical Index "batch" files I located a great many Touseys in England. In two locations I had research done and in a third I communicated with the person who had already researched the parish records. The results may be of interest to American Touseys searching for their roots. The Sunninghill parish records were searched by the Berkshire Records Office in Reading. There were no Thomases there. The Saint Alfege, Greenwich, parish records were searched by the London Metropolitan Archives. The Thomases baptized there on 26 October 1645 and 27 May 1650 both married and had their children in Saint Alfege. They could not have been the American Thomases. In Theodore Rose's book of 1916, "The Tousey Family in America," there is much confusing speculation on origins, including the attempt to link Richard Toosland of Saybrook, Connecticut, with the unrelated family name of Tousey. One of the English places mentioned is Amesbury in Wiltshire, England. John McNeille, a careful and diligent researcher married to a Tousey and living near Amesbury, stated to me, "I have spent many, many hours, indeed many, many days in the Wiltshire Record Office looking at the Amesbury and Idmiston (a village a few miles away) parish registers. Some of the records are missing but most of them are there. I can say quite categorically that there is NO Richard Towsey in the records for either Baptisms or Marriages. There is also a transcipt, made I suppose by the Wiltshire FHS, and there is no Richard there either." This is really icing on the cake, for my research on the American side demonstrates convincingly that Richard Toosland was not a Tousey nor the father of Thomas Tousey of Wethersfield. Thus, John McNeille's findings on Thomas Touseys are of greater relevance. There is in existence a listing of deaths of Touseys, largely based on John McNeille's research, that includes the mythical Richard as well as Thomas of Wethersfield. However, the entries for these two men are bogus. They were added by a well-meaning Tousey relative based on his understanding of what the American Tousey book stated. Although there are gaps in the Amesbury/Idmiston records, particularly 1640-1660 birth records for Amesbury, no Thomas turns up in the marriage records or as the father of children born before 1679. Thus, while Thomas of Wethersfield could have been born here and been lost in the missing records, Thomas of Massachusetts, who emigrated in 1679, clearly is not from Amesbury/Idmiston.
