2. In 1860, at the age of twenty-one, William S. Tough moved to St. Joseph, Missouri. His
father gave him some capital, and he, with a partner, invested in mules and wagons, and commenced freighting from St. Joseph to Denver, CO. They prospered in business until the U.S. war between the States broke out.
3. In early 1862 Tough was field manager or wagon boss for the McDonalds, bankers and merchants of St. Joseph, who had contracted to haul supplies to military posts in northern Kansas and southern Nebraska.
4. Marriage Records for Rush County, IN 1862-1882
William S. Tough married to Harriet E. Abernathy on 25 Oct 1865 book 9, p. 278.
After William Tough married, he settled in Leavenworth county, KS. On March 23, 1873, he was appointed U.S. Marshal for Kansas, retaining the post until 1876, during a turbulent time when some of the plains notables served under him as deputy U.S. marshals.
5. For many years, Tough, with his sons, conducted a large horse and mule market at the Kansas City stock yards.
6. Jackie Lewin, Curator, St. Joseph Museum, provides the following information: In an April 14, 1913 newspaper article entitled "Brief History of the Pony Express" several riders are listed.
