Was delighted to hear from you today. Abner Wood Torrey was my husband's great grandfather. He left IL in his youth and came to California via Salt Lake City as a drover for a company of Mormons on their trip to SLC. From there he came to Marysville, CA, where he served as sheriff. While there, he married Helen Augusta Sawtelle b. 7 Aug 1844 in Turners Corner, Maine. Helen's father had a overland freight line in Marysville, CA. Four of their six children were born in Marysville,then they moved to Eureka after 1874 where the last two children were born. Abner & Helen lived out the rest of their years in Eureka where Abner was a Judge and served as Mayor in 1907. He died 1 Apr 1910 in Eureka & buried in the family crypt in the Ocean View Cem. in Eureka, CA. Helen d.6 June 1931 in Eureka. He is in the History of California, Biographical Record of Coast Counties. Printed 1904. He is featured on page 871, which includes his picture & a more complete story of his life.
