The quandry of the Jean Torrance McConnel Jolly marriage to John Torrence
GAME CHANGER
Most of you are aware of John Torrance (1717-1804) marriage to Jean Torrance (1729-1803) and have in many cases run your line back to this couple. The basic problem here is that two different Torrance lines cross with this wedding.John is the second son of 12 children of Albert Torrance (1699-1775) who late in life moved from Ireland to Carlisle in Cumberland Co, in eastern PA.
Jane is the daughter of Hugh Torrance (1685-1779) who in turn was the son of another Hugh Torrance.Jane had one brother (that is known) who was Robert Torrance (1736-1816)
John and Jean appear to have had 14 children although not all well documented. Most of the Torrance lines descend from these children.
BUT, in a flash of recognition, I suddenly realized that I have ignored Jean's siblings altogether, and as a consequence all the descendants of Robert and any others. This could be a line that needs more study as the origins of several collateral lines may begin here.
I run my search of Torrance from the oldest known ancestor of John, and have ignored the oldest known ancestor of Jean.My work includes all children with spouses, and all grandchildren and all great grandchildren and so on down to modern day.But often a known branch in a small town will have other Torrance folks near by who are unknown. They may be descendants of Jean's brother Robert.
I thought I would not run Jean's children and so on in her family line as it is well documented in the John Torrance tree, but realize that we need to see the relationships of the two lines which are closely linked.Jean's children have Robert and wife as aunt and uncle as well as any other of Robert's siblings. And so on down to today.
I show THESE children of John & Jane.
1 Alexander Torrence (1754-)
2 John Torrence (1758-) x Elizabeth at Chester, PA

Many of these people remained in Cooleman, Ireland in small houses.
On a new tack,
Vermont is a puzzle of sorts.
I show four origins for Torrence lines there.
Thomas Torrance (1749-1842) x Eunice Lacy lived in Sandgate, VT at one point. He is a son of Thomas Torrance, John's brother.
Thomas Torrance (1742-1828) x Mary lived in Vermont at one point. He is a son of Samuel Torrance, John's brother.
William Torrance(1744-1816) x Lucy Castle lived in Bennington Co, VT at one point. William is a brother of Thomas and son of Samuel Torrance, John's brother.
John Torrance (1752-) x Rhoda Lacey lived in Rutland Co, VT at one point.John is a son of Samuel Torrance, John's brother.
So, there you have it.
Anyone with information on JEAN's siblings should contact me so I can build up this line more quickly.I hope you see the wisdom of this alternative Torrence line.
