I use Ancestry.com for most census searches. Here's some additional information to fill some gaps:
1875 Kansas State Census, Greenwood, Eureka: "E.K. Torrance (24; b. IL; labour) with wife H.L. Torrance (23; b. PA; wash woman) and daughter Luella (1; b. KS); Image 3/20 at Ancestry.com; www.ancestry.com.
1880 U.S. Census, Kansas, Greenwood, Eureka: "Elbert K. Tomance [the enumerator wrote the double r's in a way that makes them look like an "m"] (29; b. IL; father b. [left blank]; mother b. NY; saddler) with wife Louise (28; b. PA; parents b. [left blank]; keeping house) with children, both b. in KS: Louella (6) and Cora (4)," Image 2/26 at Ancestry.com; www.ancestry.com.
1885 Colorado State Census, Gunnison, District 2, “B. Torrance (34; b. IL; parents birthplaces [left blank]; harness maker) with wife C.W. (33; b. PA; father b. PA; mother b. NY; housewife) with children, both born in KS: E.K. (11) and Louisa (9),” Image 17/34 at Ancestry.com; www.ancestry.com. [Boy! Did the enumerator ever screw this one up – the children obviously are confused with the parents in this census.]
1920 U.S. census, Washington, Kitsap, Silverdale, Dist. 59, "Elbridge K. Torrance (69; b. IL; parents both b. NY; farmer, general farm) with wife Louisa H. (68; b. NY; father b. NY; mother b. PA)," Image 9/15 at Ancestry.com; www.ancestry.com.The Johnsons you mentioned actually live in the next dwelling house.Elof (Swedish widower) and sons lived at dwelling no. 251, while the Torrances lived in no. 252.
One thing is very clear: Elbridge surely did not know that his father, Thomas Torrance, was born in Massachusetts. Also, the Quackenbush brother possibility is interesting.
