Thanks for the reply. I have since looked at the 1891 census, and discovered that the father's name was George. However, his wife's name is listed as Georgina - very odd, but my great gradfather, William, and his siblings Alice and John are both there. So, unfortunately I am no closer to solving the mystery, as I cannot find an appropriate George and Mary Jane in the 1881 census.

Unfortunately I no longer live in Preston, so I will have to wait until the next time that I am up that way on a weekday and call in at the records office.
