Greetings! Perhaps you have found the information you were seeking by now, but if not, I have it.
My great-grandfather was Charles Knox Tooley, born in Ava, MO in 1881, the son of James Knox Tooley and Susan McMurtry (I didn't have her middle name). James Knox Tooley (born in Kentucky in 1854, according to my grandmother) was the son of Tandy Dawson Tooley and Lorinda Jenkins. I cannot put my hands at the moment on the source of Tandy and Lorinda being his parents, but when another researcher on the web posted it, I was delighted, as it was the "link" I was missing to the earlier Tooleys.
My grandmother wrote of her grandparents (James Knox and Susan), "No-one who ever saw my grand-father would doubt that he was Irish...black hair, snapping black eyes and a long upper lip. Myu father inherited the dark hair, the blue eyes of his mother and the Irish temper from someone."
I was told by the late Tom Vinson that several sons in the extended Tooley family married McMurtry girls.
He also said that Jesse Newton Tooley, son of George and Lydia (Wheeler) Tooley, was born 7/18/1858 in Pike Co. Ind. He married Rachel Melvina McMurtry, daughter of William Wilson McMurtry and Ethel Stevens. Jesse and Rachel were Tom's great-grandparents.
