Toenes Family - Germany to Alabama
Posted by: Bryan Toenes Date: April 05, 2001 at 17:50:37
  of 25

My family came to Alabama in the early 1860s. A distant cousin in New Jersey told me that the name was spelled Tonjes with an umlaut over the "o". Heinrich Tonjes was my ancestor, and in America he began spelling the name Toenes as I do.

As far as I know, the family was from Kirchdorf in Germany. Most of the information I have on the family is from Lutheran church records.

Does anyone know what this surname means? I am told that it is a common first name in northern Germany. I have also seen so many variations in spelling.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
