Just saw your post. I am a decendent of Tompkins from Greene County.
My GGGrandfather was Henry Tompkins. His daughter Susan Caroline married my GGrandfather Robert Garrett. From some of what I have it seems Henry came from Albany County. There are as you guessed many many Tompkins in the upper NY state area. From all the info I have researched they are decendents of Ralph Tompkins, who came over on the Truelove. The True love was part of the Wintrop Fleet and the Mayflower was also part of that fleet. Here is a site you can go to and find alot of information about Greene County and those who lived there. Many Tompkins are buried in Medway Christian Church Cemetery.
