The following inscription is on a bronze plaque on the front of the Tompkins County Court House in Ithaca, New York at the corner of N. Tioga and Court Streets.

Daniel D. Tompkins
Born 1774, Died 1825, Served New York State as Member of Constitutional Convention and Assembly 1801; Judge of Supreme Court 1804-7; Governor 1807-1817; Chancellor of University of State of New York; Defender of the Frontier, Commander of 3rd District Militia, 1814-15, Message on Abolition of Slavery in New York 1817, Vice President of United States 1817-25, Patriot of Brilliant Ability, Untiring Energy.
