The following inscription is on a bronze plaque on the front of the Tompkins County Court House in Ithaca, New York at the corner of N. Tioga and Court Streets. "USD 1812 1784 - 1815 Tompkins County Created April 17, 1817 Named for Daniel D. Tompkins Born 1774, Died 1825, Served New York State as Member of Constitutional Convention and Assembly 1801; Judge of Supreme Court 1804-7; Governor 1807-1817; Chancellor of University of State of New York; Defender of the Frontier, Commander of 3rd District Militia, 1814-15, Message on Abolition of Slavery in New York 1817, Vice President of United States 1817-25, Patriot of Brilliant Ability, Untiring Energy. In Grateful Appreciation This Marker is Erected By and Under the Auspices of the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 State of New York 1949"
